PRIVATE EVENT - Sports Gambling & Mental Health: FREE Webinar by WCC

Gambling & sports wagering affects many in athletics. Learn how to mitigate risks and how it intersects with mental health in sport.

WCC Sports Gambling & Mental Health:

What you need to know and how to protect yourself and athletes from associated risks

This 1-hour webinar is sponsored by WCC and provided by the U.S. Center for Mental Health & Sport is for the intended target audience of athletics coaches, staff, and administrators from all member institutions of WCC. Sports gambling and wagering is a prevalent trend that coaches, staff, administrators, and our athletes must understand how to navigate in order to mitigate risks. These risks may be from direct participation in sports wagering or from others trying to gain beneficial "insider" information. Dr. Lia Nower, a leading expert in the field who directs the Rutgers Center for Gambling Studies, will share information to increase awareness about the risks associated with gambling, information about action steps that can be taken to avoid risks, and resources that can be utilized for assistance when needed. The webinar will also provide insight into the connection between sports gambling and mental health.

Athletics administrators, staff, and coaches from WCC institutions are welcome to attend.

We look forward to seeing you there!

PRIVATE EVENT - ACT! to Support Athlete Mental Health: FREE Webinar by WCC

Learn factors in sport that protect athletes from and put them at greater risk for experiencing mental health challenges and how to support.

Join us for the U.S. Center for Mental Health & Sport's ACT! Mental Health Awareness Certification. The objectives of the USC-MHS ACT! Certification are much like those of a first aid course. We will teach participants the signs and symptoms of a mental health challenge and/or crisis, how to de-escalate a situation to avoid harm to oneself or others, and what pathways are available for additional professional support. The course also focuses on those factors about intercollegiate sport participation that can protect individuals from experiencing mental health challenges and those factors that can put them at greater risk. Our training always includes national and local community resources that can be utilized for additional mental health support.

The course agenda is based on the acronym ACT!, encouraging anyone who is concerned about their own mental health or that of someone else to act in support. First, we will grow AWARENESS of the importance of mental health in sport along with the prevalence of challenges, next we will provide information on signs and symptoms to be aware of regarding the most common mental health CHALLENGES experienced in intercollegiate athletics (depression, anxiety, and suicidality), and finally, options will be provided on how to TAKE ACTION if you are concerned about yourself or someone else, including any WCC athlete.

Athletics administrators, staff, and coaches from WCC institutions are welcome to attend.

We look forward to seeing you there!

PRIVATE EVENT: Accelerate Mental Health - Beyond Sport, Nov 12, 12-2PM ET

Identify the strengths and areas for improvement for promoting positive mental health that are unique to your sport organization and/or team

Accelerate Mental Health Workshop:

The Accelerate Mental Health Workshop is a continuation of the learning from the ACT! Mental Health Awareness Certification. While ACT! focused primarily on your knowledge and skills to support mental health as an individual within your athletic community, Accelerate provides an opportunity to bring about faster change by beginning or continuing the development of action plans and policies that support mental health on teams and throughout the organization. Determining how to best serve mental health needs cannot be based on a one-size-fits-all model across all organizations. This workshop helps identify unique risk and protective factors present within your organization and/or team that provide pathways to and barriers from members of your community being able to experience thriving mental health. You will then be able to use this information to take steps to align mental health policies with a validated model for mentally healthy sport environments.
